EnviroManager Hazardous
Materials Management Module
The EnviroManager
Hazardous Materials Management Module is used by organizations to inventory
and track chemical usage and produce EPCRA Tier I and II regulatory reports.
EnviroManager HazMat
Module is a Closed Loop system that offers centralized management and
tracking of hazardous materials and hazardous wastes.
The software helps
organizations to maintain best management practices throughout the hazardous
materials life cycle to reduce risk to human health and the environment.
The
module enables organizations to implement a cradle-to-grave management
process for hazardous materials that could eventually become hazardous
waste. Oversight begins at the cradle phase when chemical purchases are
pre-approved using a Chemical Authorization Request (CAR).. Incoming chemicals
can be logged into the system at the receiving dock or stocking room with
print labels prepared and attached to each item. Chemicals can then be
checked out as needed using the transactions register. Any waste subsequently
generated is tracked until it is disposed.
Centralized management
of hazardous materials ensures facility-wide management of all hazardous
chemicals. Information stored in EnviroManager includes the location of
stored chemicals and amounts stored. The software tracks hazardous materials
from the time it arrives at the organization until it is used up or disposed
a hazardous waste.
Without good controls
of hazardous materials, organizations stand the risk of being cited for
high levels of hazardous material inventories. Inventory control, using
a software tool like EnviroManager, leads to cost savings and minimization
of unnecessary wastes. The software also supports collection of compliance
data for reporting requirements such as Right-To-Know Laws and Pollution
Prevention Requirements.
The following business management practices are typically implemented
with the software's deployment:
- Reuse procedures
- Purchases by Unit-of-Use
versus Unit-of-Issue
- Centralized issue
and storage points
- Program oversight
by a centralized team
- Authorized user/use
List
- Tracking System
of chemicals in storage by location and amount
- Prescribed inventory
level thresholds
- Training and awareness
programs
The software provides
the following advantages:
- Provides a tool
that allows facility personnel to manage and identify where hazardous
materials are stored.
- Increases the accuracy
of regulatory Tier I and II EPCRA reports.
- Reduces the ordering
of hazardous chemicals that is already available which saves on procurement
and disposal costs.
- Reduces the labor
required for regulatory reporting and inventory management.
- Using a pharmacy
concept, the software establishes a centralized facility to manage hazardous
materials and provide a daily accounting of the use and disposition
of hazardous materials.
- Support emergency
planning requirements by generating a list of chemicals stored by location
across the organization.
- Can be used to
calculate VOC emissions by chemical usage and VOC content.
- Identifies each
chemical material by chemical name, CAS number, trade name or other
common synonym.
- Identifies reportable
threshold quantities for any hazardous chemical.
- Reduces risk by
identifying the amount and types of hazardous and extremely hazardous
materials used at an organization.
- The software includes
a bar coding capability that results in efficient and accurate inventory
control.
- EnviroManager's
Container Labeling Module creates printable container labels in multiple
formats, including: NFPA and HMIS.
Once a full hazardous
materials management process is implemented, organizations will be able
to do the following:
- Order, distribute,
and manage all hazardous materials from a central facility to minimize
the quantity of hazardous materials entering the installation.
- Allow customers
to order by unit-of-use rather than unit-of-issue. For example, hazardous
chemicals may be dispensed by cans as opposed to by cases.
- Establish reuse
procedures that allow customers to return unused quantities of hazardous
materials for free redistribution to other customers.
- Establish an authorized
user/use list (AUL) to determine which hazardous materials may be used
at designated locations or for specified applications.
- Implement an automated
tracking system to follow the life cycle of hazardous materials as they
enter the installation and are consumed or disposed of.
- Establish inventory
levels at user locations to meet demands without keeping excess hazardous
material on site.
- Implement a hazardous
materials training and awareness program for the benefit of all participating
employees.
- Deliver hazardous
chemicals from the central issue facility to the individual work sites.

DHS
Chemicals of Interest List
EnviroManager software's Chemical Assurance Module includes the finalized
version of the Department of Homeland Securitys Facility Anti-Terrorism
Standards - Chemicals of Interest list. By including this list, EnviroManager
makes it possible for software users to verify if they have any chemicals
on that list.
This list contains
chemicals that, if possessed by a facility in a specified quantity,
trigger a requirement to complete and submit a DHS online consequence
assessment tool called a Top-Screen. When this information is submitted,
DHS will have a better ability to determine whether a facility presents
a high level of security risk and must meet additional risk-minimization
requirements outlined in the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards
(CFATS).
